Wood Turning Workshop – Drechseln

7. Februar @ 08:0017:00

This hands-on wood turning workshop is designed for anyone interested in transforming raw wood
into functional and artistic objects such as bowls, candle stands, and small jewelry pieces. The
workshop focuses on both creativity and craftsmanship, guiding participants step by step from basic
machine handling to more advanced designs.

Each workshop session lasts 3 hours and is held once every two weeks, allowing enough time
between sessions for practice, reflection, and skill development.
The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as participants who want to gradually improve their
turning skills through multiple levels.

Workshop Structure & Levels

The workshop is divided into four progressive levels. Participants can start from Level 1 and
continue through higher levels in future sessions, but they can also start at a higher level.

Level 1 – Introduction to Wood Turning

  • Getting familiar with the turning machine (lathe)
  • Understanding basic tools and chisels
  • Simple turning exercises
  • Making a basic object (simple candle holder or cylindrical form)

Level 2 – Control & Precision

  • Better control of chisels
  • Improving surface quality
  • Introduction to shaping curves
  • Making a small bowl or refined candle stand

Level 3 – Design & Complexity

  • Working from a simple design idea
  • Deeper hollowing techniques
  • Exploring proportions and balance
  • Creating more detailed bowls or decorative objects

Level 4 – Advanced Practice & Personal Projects

  • Working on more complex designs
  • Combining function and aesthetics
  • Personal product development (jewelry, sculptural forms, or custom objects)
  • Finishing techniques and surface details

Participants are encouraged to progress at their own pace and choose the level that best matches
their experience.

Introduction to the Turning Machine

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the wood turning machine (lathe):

  • Main parts of the machine and how they work
  • Speed control and its effect on wood
  • Mounting and securing wood safely
  • Understanding rotation and cutting direction

The goal is to help participants feel confident and comfortable using the machine.

Tools & Materials

Participants will learn about and work with:

  • Wood turning chisels (gouge, skew, parting tool, etc.)
  • Sandpapers with different grits
  • Measuring and marking tools
  • Saw (for preparing the wood)

Each tool will be introduced with its specific use and correct handling method

How to Use the Tools

A key part of the workshop is learning proper technique:

  • Correct body posture while turning
  • How to hold chisels safely and comfortably
  • Understanding the angle of holding chisels for clean and controlled cuts
  • Using tool rest correctly

Hands-on guidance will be provided throughout the session.

Safety Guidelines

Safety is a priority in every session. Participants will be instructed to:

  • Always wear safety glasses
  • Use ear protection (earplugs or earmuffs)
  • Wear a dust mask during sanding
  • Avoid loose clothing and jewelry
  • Use gloves only when the machine is OFF (never while turning)

Clear safety rules will be explained before starting the machine

From Raw Wood to Finished Product

Participants will experience the full process of wood turning:

  1. Design Selection
We begin with a simple design or product idea.
  2. Choosing Suitable Wood
Selecting the right type of wood based on the design and function.
  3. Preparing the Wood
Finding the center point on both sides of the wood
If the wood is a cube, removing extra material using a saw
Cutting sharp corners to make the form closer to a circle
  4. Mounting on the Lathe
Securing the wood properly on the turning machine.
  5. Turning & Shaping
Gradually shaping the wood using chisels.
  6. Sanding & Finishing
Smoothing the surface and preparing the final product.

By the end of the session, each participant will have a finished handmade object.

Who Can Join

  • Beginners with no prior experience
  • Designers, artists, and craft lovers
  • Anyone interested in learning wood turning step by step

No previous experience is required—just curiosity and willingness to learn.
